Prep for Winter and Prevent Frozen Pipes!
The first step to preventing plumbing problems this winter is scheduling a plumbing inspection with our Home Performance Specialists. The next step is to take the appropriate steps to protect your pipes. How so? By:
- Drain outdoor faucets and hoses and turn off the water supply going to them.
- Insulate exposed pipes in your basement or crawlspace, and beneath kitchen and bathroom sinks.
- Leave cabinets cracked open and run your heating system at least 50°F even when you aren’t home, to prevent under-sink pipes from freezing.
What’s the Problem with Frozen Pipes?
Water expands when it freezes (by up to 9% of its total volume). This causes pressure inside the pipe until it bursts. When the ice thaws, you will have the problem of leaking water.
If you discover that you have frozen pipes, the best thing you can do is call our team. Do not try to thaw pipes on your own! You will almost certainly end up with damaged pipes in this case. But we’re here to help.
